This is What I Learnt Making a Video Résumé

This weekend I made a video résumé for a job I really want. I have made videos before, but once I saw the job posting I wanted to blast out a quick video as quick as possible!

Step 1: list all the important things you have done so far ( turn thou résumé into a video)

Step 2: create a story board…Took 3 tries. You need to create a good flow. Make sure you cover all the questions they asked.

example: Introduction -> Where I’m from -> University -> Jobs most recent -> Something about my self (they are going to work with me, they need to know how I work personally) -> My goals/ salary also if they ask -> Questions for them -> Ways to contact you.

Step 3: Create script, for me this meant cutting my cover letter into but size pieces and making them natural to say. ( I am not too great in front of a camera)

Step 4: Film! ( oh and be prepared to feel awkwad)

Step 5: Editing! I used a IMovie for this because its easy and has great themes to use. I also used Keynote to create animated graphics, its an easy tool that I somehow learnt to use as an animation tool!

Step 6: look for mistakes, sound, spelling, timing etc.

Step 7: Have someone look at it even if you really don’t want them to

Step 8: Send!

What I would have done differently:

If I wasn’t so eager and worried the position would go, I would have spent more time on the video. I would have cleaned up the transitions, filmed in a better place, like a park and now, looking back, I know there are so many things I could have included! But I am still proud of what I could accomplish so quickly.

Here are some tips!

  • Dress professionally in business attire, just as if you were going to an in-person interview.
  • Keep your video resume short: one – three minutes.
  • Look at the camera not at the desk or table below you.
  • Don’t speak too fast.
  • Make sure there isn’t any background noise and that the wall behind you isn’t too busy.
  • Practice what you’re going to say ahead of time.
  • Start by mentioning your name (first and last).
  • Focus on your professional endeavors, not your personal ones.
  • Discuss why you would be a good employee and what you can do for the company that hires you.
  • Thank the viewer.

Video Editing

My task this week is to make and edit this promotional video for the annual Soirée du Vin coming up in October. This video’s purpose is to celebrate the 10 years of fun and support. I had to ensure all the right faces were shown and that all the right emotions would be brought to surface when watching it.

I also created the short animation in the beginning which is a graphic shown on the front of the invite. I wanted to bring that image to life in this movie.

You can see it here: http://www.soireeduvin.org 🙂

Rising Star Award – Video Producer and Editor

Watch the video I created hoping to catch everyone’s attention and persuade them to help Charlotte here!

This year, we have chosen ISTP alumna and Peace Corps volunteer Charlotte Emilie Steppling as the recipient of our Rising Star Award. We are proud to honor Charlotte because she exemplifies the qualities of an ISTP “Rising Star” alumna, having shown incredible generosity of spirit and strength of character in her service to the Peace Corps.

Charlotte’s work exemplifies one of the most beautiful possible outcomes of the gift of an ISTP education – she has taken the skills and passions she has learned, and multiplied them many times over by offering those gifts openheartedly to others.

To see the amazing changes Charlotte has made, read her blog: https://barefootinmada.wordpress.com
