This is What I Learnt Making a Video Résumé

This weekend I made a video résumé for a job I really want. I have made videos before, but once I saw the job posting I wanted to blast out a quick video as quick as possible!

Step 1: list all the important things you have done so far ( turn thou résumé into a video)

Step 2: create a story board…Took 3 tries. You need to create a good flow. Make sure you cover all the questions they asked.

example: Introduction -> Where I’m from -> University -> Jobs most recent -> Something about my self (they are going to work with me, they need to know how I work personally) -> My goals/ salary also if they ask -> Questions for them -> Ways to contact you.

Step 3: Create script, for me this meant cutting my cover letter into but size pieces and making them natural to say. ( I am not too great in front of a camera)

Step 4: Film! ( oh and be prepared to feel awkwad)

Step 5: Editing! I used a IMovie for this because its easy and has great themes to use. I also used Keynote to create animated graphics, its an easy tool that I somehow learnt to use as an animation tool!

Step 6: look for mistakes, sound, spelling, timing etc.

Step 7: Have someone look at it even if you really don’t want them to

Step 8: Send!

What I would have done differently:

If I wasn’t so eager and worried the position would go, I would have spent more time on the video. I would have cleaned up the transitions, filmed in a better place, like a park and now, looking back, I know there are so many things I could have included! But I am still proud of what I could accomplish so quickly.

Here are some tips!

  • Dress professionally in business attire, just as if you were going to an in-person interview.
  • Keep your video resume short: one – three minutes.
  • Look at the camera not at the desk or table below you.
  • Don’t speak too fast.
  • Make sure there isn’t any background noise and that the wall behind you isn’t too busy.
  • Practice what you’re going to say ahead of time.
  • Start by mentioning your name (first and last).
  • Focus on your professional endeavors, not your personal ones.
  • Discuss why you would be a good employee and what you can do for the company that hires you.
  • Thank the viewer.
